Leonardo DiCaprio pushes it to the limit with each and every one of his performances. For Alejandro González Iñárritu’The Revenant, he’s willing to be mauled by a goddamn grizzly bear.

The latest trailer for Iñárritu’s highly anticipated follow up to Birdman only heightens that anxiety as we watch the star go through hell and back to survive the frosty North American forests and take revenge on those who robbed him dead.

‘We did what we had to do,’ Tom Hardy explains to his fellow fur traders. ‘He was buried right.’ Not so fast Mad Max. Looks as if it’ll take more than just a few tufts of soil to put Lenny DiCap down.

Revenant

Based on a true story, this 19th century western thriller tells the story of Hugh Glass (DiCaprio), a fur trader who is mauled by a bear while out in the wilderness. Rather than assist, however, his companion John Fitzgerald (Hardy) robs him and leaves him for dead. ‘With sheer will as his only weapon,’ Glass is able to survive the attack and sets out on a ‘quest to survive and exact vengeance on Fitzgerald,’ according to the plot synopsis.

Development of the film began in August 2001 when Akiva Goldsman purchased Punke’s manuscript with the intent of producing the film. The film was originally set to be directed by Park Chan-wook with Samuel L. Jackson in mind to star, and later by John Hillcoat with Christian Bale in negotiations to star. Both directors left the project, and Iñárritu signed on to direct in August 2011. In April 2014, after several delays in production due to other projects, Iñárritu confirmed that he was beginning work on The Revenant and that DiCaprio would play the lead role. Principal photography began in October 2014 and ended in August 2015.

The Revenant hits theaters on Christmas Day. Watch the newly revealed first trailer above.
