Will Smith is “upset” about his character in Independence Day Being Killed Off
Fans weren’t the only ones to mourn the loss of Captain Steve Hiller from Independence Day, as it turns out Will Smith — the actor who portrayed the charismatic, cigar-chomping, catchphrase-spewing character from the 1996 blockbuster — has admitted, ‘It was terrible when I found out my character died.’
Smith told Yahoo! News, ‘The [Independence Day: Resurgence] trailer looks really cool…I’m going to be sitting around with tears in my eyes when that one comes out.’
The I Am Legend star says he didn’t return for Independence Day: Resurgence because he was working on Suicide Squad when the movie went into production. However, he does admit that director Roland Emmerich discussed the project several times prior, saying, ‘Roland [Emmerich] and I had talked about it.’
The death of Captain Hiller was revealed on the Independence Day: Resurgence viral site, which writes, ‘While test piloting the ESD’s first alien hybrid fighter, an unknown malfunction causes the untimely death of Col. Hiller…Hiller’s valor in the War of ’96 made him a beloved global icon whose selfless assault against the alien mothership lead directly to the enemy’s defeat. He is survived by his wife Jasmine and his son Dylan.’
The possibility of a sequel to Independence Day had long been discussed, and the film’s producer and writer, Dean Devlin, once stated that the world’s reaction to the September 11 attacks influenced him to strongly consider making a sequel to the film. Devlin began writing an outline for a script with Emmerich, but in May 2004, Emmerich said he and Devlin had attempted to “figure out a way how to continue the story”, but that this ultimately did not work, and the pair abandoned the idea.
The film will take place twenty years after the original, when reinforcements of the original alien race arrive at Earth after finally receiving a distress call:
Twenty years after the War of 1996, the international community recovers and builds up Earth’s defenses using technology salvaged from remains of the alien forces, with some military forces assembled on the Moon. However, the aliens were able to send a distress signal before their final defeat while others went into hiding elsewhere around the world. The aliens in deep space receive the signal and threaten the human race once more with a new, even larger and more powerful battle fleet.
Independence Day: Resurgence is set for a June 24 release.
